Sorry Patrick. Those weren't your tires so the only cut you'll get is my cheese.:)
Here's my race report:
I did a full day of corner working on Saturday to get that requirement out of the way so that next month I could move up to Expert. It turned out that Ryan Long, the guy who got first back in January when I was 2nd, was also doing corner work that day. He took the Advanced Racer's clinic on Friday and told me how Kenny Kopecky was giving him pointers and following him around the track to critique his lines and riding. How cool is that? Ryan was gracious enough to pass on what he learned onto me. We traveled around to the different stations throughout the day and watched the different lines people were taking. I was amazed at how close to the inside of turn 2 Beck was riding. His right knee was literally hanging over the dirt.
On race day I ended up meeting the other two Ryans (Regalado and Gagliano) that podiumed in my race last month. Regalado was in my race this month but both Long and Gagliano were about to lose their virginity in the Expert class. They both did great in their races.
During the morning practice I duked it out with Jason Butler, passing him in turn 3 and then getting repassed down the front straight. It was such a blast going back and forth like that.
For the race I was gridded in pole position and Ryan R. was 2nd. I got my usual crappy start while Ryan got the hole shot for the lead. I saw him and three other riders head for turn one while I stayed on the outside playing catch up. Ryan had 4 bike lengths on everybody coming out of 1 as the three riders behind him started towards the inside of 1. I kept the power on and took those three guys on the outside and started to go after Ryan as he started to head into 2. I managed to pass on the outside midway through the turn and gunned it for three. I was in the lead and heading into nine when out of the corner of my left eye I see Ryan coming. He was on the outside of me as we went into and out of turn nine. Talk about balls. Down the front straight he pulled away but I managed to get on his rear tire when we headed up towards 4A. I tried to pass him on the inside but didn't have the hp to pull it off. After 4B, he was gone. I eventually settled into a good pace and finished 2nd. It was an incredibly fun race and am glad to finish out the Novice class with it. I never felt more comfortable at speed and pushing it than I did this whole weekend. I now know where I can make up time and push it more.
Thanks to the three Ryans and Steve for the pointers and company this weekend. I'm looking forward to being out there in Expert with everyone next month.
