View Full Version : Laid

Just got my bike and laid it 2 weeks later because I was going too fast into a left curve on Torrey Pines and spilled. [Any help with countersteering would be AWESOME.] Now I'll be in a knee cast for a month, but I'll heal in time for summer. Plus I can't wait til my bike gets outta the shop this week :)

After some research I learned I became a statistic. A considerable number of accidents reported were due to inexperience and failing to manuevere a left hand curve. [Hurt Report] Poo.

Yes, you did tick the number on the statistic dial. Fortunately, you only ticked one dial and not the other.

Take it easy with the bike, judge corners like you'll never have traction and take it SLOW! I'ld rather see a slow and cautious new rider than a fast and out of control one!

Take the MSF course. It'll teach you what you need to know, and when you're finished (provided you went to the DMV in the first place to get your permit, you'll walk away with your endorsement.

Helpful hints- Push down on the bar on the side of the turn i.e.-Right turn, push down on the right handle bar.

Slow before the corners, and "roll" on throttle in the corner. It'll keep the back tire planted, gaining additional traction and helping the bike turn into the corner.

you're right. corners are killers for newer (and sometimes not so newer) riders.

buck up and you'll be fine in no time.

+1. (with NOCONTROL) you know what man. you can get all types of advice written down in a post... but there's no substitution for show and tell. if you'd like some one to help you be a better rider. . i've been on this forum for a while now... and i can safely say from expierence some one would/will help. lots of these hypercycle guys have been riding since Noah's Ark. J/K. and i haven't seen a time that they weren't willing to lend a helping hand.

Check out sport riding techniques by Nick Ienastch or Keith Code's books Twist of the wrist 2 and 1.

Pot calling the kettle black, old man?

Actually, I'm surprised you didn't correct nocontrol being an MSF instructor and all.

It's push FORWARD, not down, on the bar to countersteer. Although, chances are that countersteering was not the problem as much as inexperience was since Torrey Pines isn't too tight of a road and you probably just didn't setup for the turn properly (vision, body position, etc). Definitely read some books on motorcycling techniques as Sean (GPTECHMAN) suggests. Heal fast and take it easy out there.

ok, we'll fix this right and proper.

look left, PRESS left = GO left

look right, PRESS right = GO right

forget push/pull. for a newer rider it's easy to miscommunicate those words and end up with something you don't want.

sean, as far as TOTW vol 1. i do NOT recommend it for a newer rider. it's advanced racing techniques which leave MOST with a thousand yard stare. vol 2 on the other hand, steps down a little and does a better job of explaining some techinques which are easier to understand for most

Press left or right? Is there a button on my bike that says left and right? :squid:

When you get your bike back we can go to an empty lot ( or empty road) and get your form and what habits to learn and unlearn down...

It's interesting that a major portion of the advice in the forums is exactly what they teach you in the MSF class. I too care of all that business, I am interested in the Advanced Begin course. Has anyone taken that?

Just because the title of the thread is "laid" doesn't mean you're going to get some. I'm sure if you look for a thread called "greyed," you'll find more action there.
