Seeing how I crash so damn much, I was reading up on mouthguards and they have been shown to counteract brain injuries and keep your tongue nice and whole. I've also seen alot of pro racers use them, but am wondering whether I should get a custom/molded mouthguard or just the normal off the shelf ones? From what I've read, the custom/molded ones offer better protection but cost $100-$200 whereas the supermarket ones ares $10 but don't offer as much protection. Anyone have any advice?

I got one for my son and it was a moldable one. I bought it at a sporting goods store for around 15 bucks, quality stuff.

yeah, from playing 15+ years of hockey, they really would cut down on head achs and pains from bit hits, now that you bring it up, i think its a great idea to wear one while riding,..... dont buy a clear one....if it gets lodged in your throat it makes it much harder to find and get out....( in hockey they wouldnt even allow clear ones...) and also trim it to fit well, and make sure that your breathing is not impared...
the cleap ones are fine, just get one that fits well. i like shockdoctors just mold to fit....
ive had 3 custom ones made... they are nice, and usually thinner, but if you do the right trimming the store bought ones can be just as good and a hell of a lot cheaper

Hmm, I've always thought about it but thought there must be a reason people don't wear them. Now you've got me thinking about getting one again...

That sounds like a good idea, I tend to grit my teeth when I ride I think this will help. I think your dental plan may help out with a custom one if your dentist agrees you need one.

w000 hockey...
i played lacrosse and hockey.. and those things saved my teeth... (as i ruin them now by chewing ice)
the moldable ones from big5 are quite good, you just plop them in boiling water for like 5 mintues then put them in your mouth...
all you have to do is cut of the string thing and plastic extender thing that you would usually attach to your gridiron...

Im not sure if gritting your teeth would be a good thing to want to practice. I use to run track and cross country competitvely and they always taught us to not grit our teeth cause it makes you tense through your arms and body, dont know if i would want my arms tense while riding. Kinda want em to be nice and relaxed on teh bars not grip of death cause your biting down on a mouth guard

YOu chew ice?.... I believe that is a sign of having low iron content in your blood.... then again it may just be your thing. I knew a guy who used to gnaw on aluminum cans in high school. Oh and I found a message board for ya...

Anyhoo... mouth guards. You can get 'em at Target for like two bucks. I think I'll grab one before my next trackday.

Its not gonna make you as fast as him lol
Why not just slow down a tad so you don't crash? At a track day there is no cash prize or fame to be gotten. Slow down, speed comes from progression not from just blindly trying a corner much faster than you normally do.
I also talk to myself when riding so i would not wear one. I also worry about breathing being impared. If your looking to reduce injury, how about a helmet collar. Probablly better $ spent for more protection. my $00.02
