So I have my permit, finished my MSF course, and just bought my first bike ('03 Kawasaki Ninja 500R) 2 days ago. A friend told me to go to BuyMoto for my gear, and at the BBQ today Becky was nice enough to tell me about this forum! So I wanted to stop by and say hi. =)
Any tips for a total newbie? All I have so far are gloves and helmet (on order)... I think I should get a jacket next. Any recommendations?
I'm soooooooo excited, hehe! I hope to ride with some of you soon!

Welcome to the site. Congrats on the new bike and it looks like you are headed down the right track with the MSF course. Gear is of the upmost importance and always riding within your limits. Enjoy the site!!

Welcome aboard! Alpinestar has good jackets. I'd also recommend getting a set of boots. Sidi, Alpinestar are a couple of brands.

Welcome to the board. As mentioned, get your riding gear sorted out first before you spend money on MC upgrades... Jacket and boots at a minimum, would recommend a 2 piece suit so that you get get all leathered up for longer rides, and just wear jacket and boots for shorter rides :)

Yup, what he said.
And, always remember, look where you want to go, and look through the corners (as far as you can see). If you can get your hands on Twist of the Wrist, It's a good watch/read.
Welcome.

Jennifer, it was really nice to see you and Tony today. BTW: You and Fay won some prizes during our raffle at the end of the day!! ;) We should have them in a box at BuyMoto so you can get'em when you get a chance!

Welcome! +1 on Jacket and boots. I would also agree with Bengt on getting a 2 piece suit. Check the ones at Buymoto out, or Alpinestars also makes a 2 piece for ladies.

Wow, thanks for all the great feedback! I wasn't planning on getting boots until I was a lot better rider - are they absolutely necessary for beginners?
Bryant - it was great to finally meet you. So glad Nick hooked us up with you. :) I think we'll be stopping by BuyMoto sometime this week for new tires and some other stuff. Can we stop by anytime?

well, crashing isnt restricted to advanced riders,....and i can tell you after you have your ankle ground down to the bone, a few hundred for some nice boots seems like such a steal

Sure, you can stop by any time during store hours (11-7pm M-F and 12-5pm Sat). Our sales staff is very well versed in products/accessories especially for new riders and they can answer most of your questions. For any other questions, please feel free to email me at my buymoto address. We should all get together with Nick, Tony, Anthony, etc! Help me convince Nick to get down to SD again. :headbang:
Boots are great but at the *very* least make sure you wear shoes that cover your ankles well enough to give some measure of protection in case you happen to be sliding on the ground on them. I typically use a textile riding jacket with armor built-in, Teknic Violator/Speedstar gloves, jeans and high-top basketball shoes that cover my ankles. What I plan to get soon is get some comfy boots designed for street riding and a pair of cordura riding pants to go with the rest of my gear. I think I might get one of those A* textile jackets we have in the shop right now to replace the one I have since mine is a bit torn and tattered...
