I aint gonna try anytime soon, I just wonder how they do it.
Do they use the rear break or get on and off the gas (ok, I've been playin a bit too much MotoGP2)

Mostly rear brake. But I remember someone braking it down to rear brake, throttle, and some body positioning.

i belive you let the clutch out quickly using up all available rear traction. by using the break, if is extremely hard to do, i think they just brake hard, dump clutch to get rear end loose then roll throttle to keep it out there or whatever else those guys want to do

I read in RacerX that Hayden destroys rear brake rotors because he backs it in, there was no mention of clutch, but what do I know?

I would think they have slipper clutches, but I don't know.

they do have slipper clutches, but they still are able to slide the back.
ive read more on Mccoy than haden, but he does it by the clutch.
try it yourself, go into a corner a bit too hot then slam down to 1st or second, then really really quickly snap the clutch out, the tire will controable break loose, and the more lean angle you are inputing the more sideways you get.
the rear break technique does work, but by using the clutch you put the control at your finger tips where youhave more control then your rear brake, and they are usually braking so hard that the back tire is barly on the ground.
i have a great article on it ill search for it when i get home from work.
try it on the sv, its super easy on that,...just go like 70 or so , then let the clutch out quickly till you get a traction loss, then modulate for the desired traction level.

As far as Rossi goes, I think he carries a little extra speed into a corner. Then, while pressing the 'X' button to brake, he uses 'L1' to downshift while holding 'L2' to lean against the turn. Sometimes when he's a little off his pace he taps the rear brake with the square button.
:-p

yeah i was under the impression it came out under hard fornt breaking because the rear tire was barley on the ground and looses traction easy. i hope no one tries to come into a corner too hot on palomar and slam it into first and dumps the clutch.....you WILL eat sh!t

I have been practicing this lately, basically work on it using the clutch. When i try to use the brake and clutch you get really BAD back tire chatter or hop. I have been practicing it on on/off ramps where this is usually plenty of room. Of course with no traffic around. Its kinda fun, go do it at the track though, much safer! I am a squid and i know it so thats half the battle.

yeah me too, i **** around with it when i have the space and no one is arround.
palomar isnt the place, it would be better to try it on 90 degree turns not complete roundabouts.
and yeah if i get on my brakes really hard the rear end wants to come around the front (more so after i lowered the front and raised the rear) but if you use the clutch, you really can have a good feel on getting the rear end locked up.
just like anything else, take baby steps and work on one thing at a time.
"im going to pally to back it in" probably will leave you up at the mountain
