Hey guys - new rider here. I'm JenEBean's sister actually :-p . Took the MSF course and everything with her and her husband. I'm slowly getting gear together - anyone have suggestions for a good beginner's sports bike? No Kawasaki's or Yamaha's... I ride Jen's Ninja for practice now, but want to try a different brand than the two they have.. :D

Anyway, nice to be here, hope to meet some new friends and fellow riders!

welcome! hope you find the forum helpful. Whats wrong with Kawi's and Yamaha's? I started on a Ninja 250 then switched to a R6 :guitar: But anyways, you can always try the SV 650's, great bikes as well.

Welcome to the site! I also think the sv650 can be a great bike that you can start on and not outgrow, it's friendly and yet has plenty of power that you can use as your experience level goes up, good luck!!

Welcome!

If youre willing to ride a 600, look around for a Honda F4. They are true workhorses - very trusted bikes, very learner friendly, and you can pick up a 98-99 while still sparing your bank account to much stress (anywhere from $3500 to around $4200 depending on mods and condtition).

Just my thoughts. I started on an F4 and loved it.

Heya Miss Lin! Welcome! Wow.. so you are into bikes too. The whole family is riding.. even little Timmy is getting the bug. ;p~~
SV650 is a pretty decent bike (Nick got one a few years ago). There are a few for sale at good prices (under $3500) with low mileage. I personally like the 1997-200x YZF600R for a first bike (very comfy, fairly low seat height and full fairings with excellent wind protection for a sport bike). Maybe we can all get together and talk about bikes over boba! :headbang:

Welcome to the site! Nothing wrong with the ninja 250. =) I wanted to get a GS500, I heard that's a good starter bike too. But never riden one...yet. Hope you enjoy your stay.

Despite popular opinion the best way to get your feet wet is just to go balls to the wall and dive into financing an R1 or Gsxr 750 or 1000............(don't forget to get GAP insurance incase you don't make it home from the dealership)........those bikes will teach you things that little sissy bikes like sv's and R6's won't touch on for many months. Hey, see what happens:thumbsup:

Hmmm, now that's good advice!! I'd lean more towards an SV or maybe the 650 Ninja

That's straight up from da' hood! I guess I should have specified that if you wanted to learn the ins/ outs and do's/ and definately don'ts in record time, those would be my newbie bikes of choice............

Now that that's all cleared up, I think I'm going to make myself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich..........peace out:rifle:

Welcome Xiao! Is there a reason why you mentioned No Yamaha's or Kawasaki's?!? Well I'm with the others and say SV, Monster or a Ninja 650 if you're not height deprived. If you think you're well experienced, then any 600cc bike would be my choice.

Hey you finally made it! Weren't you going to get a Kymco? That's neither a Kawai nor a Yamaha. ;)

Besides, based on a recent "incident" with the Ninja, you need something you'll be able to handle well and won't be afraid of dropping... (I'm prolly the last person in the world to be telling you this! :ha: )

welcome and may i ask how tall are you? that, unfortunately, is going to be a consideration you may want to think about. being able to touch BOTH feet while stopped is a huge confidence factor for many newer riders

This is quite true. It makes a world of difference and eliminates one of the most distracting factors of learning to ride a motorcycle (being able to confidently balance the bike when you come to a stop.)

How about a grey market 400!!!

Are you looking for a temporary bike to learn on then move into something more advanced?

The problem with the smaller bikes is that they are old and heavy. A 06 ninja is the same biek as the 96 250 ninja.

...and it would not be a new bike thread without me suggesting that the sv650 is an awesome beginner bike. Heck, its a great advanced rider bike too!!

Hey guys, thanks for all the suggestions. Just to clarify - I wanted to stay away from purchasing Kawasaki or Yamaha because my sis has a Ninja, and my brother in law the R1, so I was looking for something different, just for the experience. ;)

I like the idea of either the Honda F4 or the Yamaha YZF600R (I can't ride Tony's R1 anyway, so...), so I guess it comes down to price and availablity.

Wanderer: I'm about 5'4". I know, it's hard to find bikes for people as short as I am, but I can always get the seat shaved right?

Bodmaster: We should definitely do that boba thing - it'll be fun! And dont' worry - I know Peeps was joking about the R1 and GSX-R750/1000.... though he's right about one thing - those bikes will definitely teach me what NOT to do! :ha:

Lost: I want something that won't kill me, but I can advance on and enjoy without worrying about buying another bike shortly down the road.....

Jen: I still like the idea of a scooter, but I like the challenge of the sport bike better. I can't believe I dropped it still... Maybe a scooter will come later on, just to commute or whatever.

Welcome
There's nothing wrong with buying a Kawi or a yamaha if you know you're just going to learn on it and sell it again later. I must say one really nice thing about buying an old kawi 250 or something is that the value hardly drops, if any, in the time you'll have it. It can be rashed or whatever too and it'll hold its value (to a point). And not having to worry about dropping it or gteting it stolen is worth the peace of mind!!! Then after a few months of riding you can dump the Kawi for the same price you paid for it and then get the bike you want. Another thing is while you have the kawi (or whatever other starter bike) you don't want, you'll run into oportunities to ride other bikes and find out which one you really really like...

Hey Becky! Thanks, I'll probably have to take you up on that offer. I saw a guy at Starbucks yesterday with a F4i, he was about my size and rode it comfortably, but I guess you never know until you're actually on it yourself.

By the way, sorry if I seem impatient, but any word on my helmet yet? ^_^

WELCOME!! You've gotten some great feedback here. I would really encourage you to get a used bike first. If you get as hooked as the rest of us, you will want to upgrade later and then can spend the big bucks. For your 1st bike consider what position you want to be in. Do you want to sit upright or laying on the tank. The ergonomics will affect whether or not you enjoy the ride. Being 5' 4" is not a challenge. That is my height and I am able to ride just about anything. Go to a dealer and sit on everybike you like. This will help you decide. I am a Yamaha girl, but think the SV 650 is a great bike to start with. Just make sure you get enough ccs to keep up with traffic on the freeway.
