Just wanted to give you all a heads up

If you guys use your credit cards / sharecheck cards / etc at the gas station you may want to switch to paying with cash or keep a close eye on your accounts.

I just had my numbers stolen this weekend, and the only time I used my card the past couple of days was to pay for gas on my recent ride to Palomar on Friday (San Diego, Valley Center, Escondido). Thieves have ways of stealing numbers off the machines at the pumps...

On Sunday, my bank called me and informed me of a lot of back to back high dollar ($100 and up) charges and asked if it was legit. They weren't, so I was extremely glad that they called because I probably wouldn't have known until Sunday night.

I will probably only use my card at the pump now only if I absolutely have to. Sucks because I hate carrying cash.

Anyways... thieves suck. Be careful out there!

Ya I heard about it, some people would come in the middle of the night and connect and card read inside those credit card machines. There is just certain machines they can do it on.

I have moved on to costco and I feel pretty safe there filling up or the arco's with the big machines that must be shared by all. The gas stations with the card reader over the pumps are the ones they normally can easily get open and plant their stuff.

ARCO is the #1 place to have your card information stolen. Thieves like ARCO because they require a bank/debit card which has direct access to your personal funds. fyi

Crap, now you got me all nervous....!

But, if nothing happens to my account, you can probably rule out the stations we stopped at (3 of them, right?)

Yah I don't know... we didn't use the same pumps so it would be hard to determine which were rigged and which weren't. Hopefully nothing happens to you and hopefully the thieves get whats coming to them!

BTW... charges to my account were all made in the Southern California area, Mission Viejo, Irvine, Commerce... looks like they went on a shopping spree.

I see this all the time at work. How this usually happens is that a small device is placed on the card reader. Be sure to look for part of the card reader that looks new or not part of the original device. In the real elaborate setups there will be a spy camera set up near by to record you putting your pin # in. They wait a few weeks, then bam hit hundreds of people for 200 +. I got hit last year twice and i work for a bank!

Always ask for provisional credit so the funds are immediatly credited to your account. Also make sure you fill out the investigation forms they send you and promptly ail them back, lest they deny you claim!

I use the pumps on base... for obvious reasons... and they are cheaper!

Just had this happen to me last week! Didn't realize these scumbags can use gas pumps. I hate thieves. Had about $200 stolen before the bank cancelled the card.

Hmm...I wonder if this device works on the Mobil Speedpass system. With my luck I'm sure it does...

Thanks for the Heads up Veejay
