I want to dedicate this thread to anybody who has ever been the victim of bike theft...

12pm. Tonight. Wednesday July 12. Coming home from Karl Strauss Brewery in La Jolla. In a car with my two roomates we pull into our apartment garage at La Regencia. What do we see - my bike moved from its original parking spot - and see a guy crouched hiding behind an adjacent car!

Instantly all three of us know what is happening. My bike is in the process of getting stolen. We get out of the car and yell at the guy to get down on the ground and stay where he is - as I call 911 to haul these *******s to jail.

Now the fun begins.

The guy - a 6' lanky latino guy makes a run for it. My first roomate catches him by the neck and slams him in the the garage wall. The dumbazz has long ugly azz hair - which my roomate grabs a full hold of and proceeds to lay multiple shots on his face. Im run in and start laying body shots to gut/ribs.

Now it gets less fun.

I hear my third roomate yelling from the car - "behind you Matt, behind you!" And I proceed to get a fist to the back of my head from a second short stocky latino man. I turn to face the new attacker, but he drops back and pulls a gun on all three of us - yells that he is going to "cap us" and to release his friend. Then they turn and run. As the turn I see what he really was holding - a cell phone.

Before we can pursue, a car pulls out of nowhere, picks them up and jets.

I run after the fleeing vehicle and although it doesnt have any plates - it has a dealership plate which I identify. Only then do I remeber that I have had 911 on the phone the entire time. I get back on the line with them, am quickly transferred to the police who get a fast report and then put out an APB to all active units.

At this point, I think we lost em. Im frustrated we fell for the damn cell phone gun. My ignition box is all torn open. The first tall and lanky man lost his shoe during the fight. We find a huge pair of bolt cutters hiding under the car he hide by, that they used to tear open my ignition.

Soon a cop is on scene taking reports. While taking the report his radio squacks to life; "all units, we have the identified vehicle located at the highway 8, highway 5 junction."

Holy ****! +1 to the cops!

Then the cop takes all three of us down to the Denny's on Rosecrans where they have the suspects surrounded by TWO DIVISIONS worth of squad cars - 14 in all. A cop later said that since the pursuit took them across division lines both divisions ended up on scene.

First they have us all ID the vehicle. Then they do the suspect lineup I thought was only in movies. We positively ID both the first male, the second assailant, and the driver. Who then all get hauled off to JAIL BIATCH!

NICE!!! Good job! Two less scum bags on the streets for at least a few hours!

THE AFTERMATH:

Then the cops proceed to do an A+ investigation. The return us to our apartment garage where the take photographic evidence of the untouched crime scene. Take prints off the bolt cutters. Confirm that 911 has the entire conflict recorded - as my phone was active the whole time. And get final reports from all three of us.

The two who we "defended ourselves against" are being charged with motocycle theft as well as assault and battery, while the driver is just being charged for theft. Turns out the one of the males had a warrant out on him for guess what - bike theft. And the second guy was currently on parole for guess what - bike theft. The driver was clean - but not anymore.

Bad news: the damage to my bike. It wont start, entire ignition box is torn to shreds. And some additional body damage. Its all going to be on my insurance which has decent deductibles for comphrehesive ($250) but its defintely going to cost at least that out of my pocket.

Morale of story: it was a good night. For $250 and a punch to the back of my skull we got to beat the living **** outta one bike robber, and get the others put where they wont be touching other bikes for a while.

Like I said. This one goes out to all you guys who never saw your bikes again.

F#&$ It sue the guy for the damages to the bike, and for the emotional damage to yourself. If THIS (http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/5766288?FSO1&ATT=HMA) tool can sue Michael Jordon for looking like him, then you can sue these guys for punching you in the head and causing duress.

Awesome story AverageJock. You're lucky his "gun" turned out to be a cell phone, otherwise that desperate bike thief could have given you and your friends the worst night of your life. In any case it's great to see justice being done.

Yea, for sure - defintely glad the gun wasnt real. The car was a Gold Grand Prix - looked like a 2000.

On another note - suing for damages and fixing my bike. Anybody know a good lawyer? Anybody know a good mechanic? I wouldnt feel comfortable messing with the ignition on my own - and I dunno if Buymoto can take care of me on this one. Can they? BEx?

Considering the latest report on how San Diego has the fewest officers per resident, this is something amazing ... 14 squad cars!

Awesome story bro! You really handed this thief over. Too bad no one had a camcorder, otherwise you'd be a star on COPS. :nerd:

I can't believe or actually I can believe that happened. I live in La Regencia as well and actually moving out this month into a house. The security company sucks. I had my spark plugs broken on my old XS1100 in the parking garage and my car broken into over New Years weekend. I've lived in SD for 11 years in areas not as nice with no problems till I moved there. They need to install security cameras in the parking garage. I started parking by bike and car outside in my other assigned spot. It's cool that you guys kicked so A**.

as far as getting your money back for what you have to pay to fix it....

Back in my young and dumb days, I had to pay restitution ($641.83) for some damage I caused during a B&E.... I wasn't able to claim Bankruptcy over it because it was a Penal Fine, or whatever it is they call it, and was paid to the court, who then paid the victim(s). Maybe thats a way to go rather than a lawsuit, which you may never see pay-out from since its a civil, rather than criminal matter.... But then again, I could be wrong.

+1 on nailing these bastards.

Yea,

That news article is us for sure. Aparently he intervied an officer following the action.

As far as deleting the post - no need. The police report includes it already and following verbal force to restrain the criminals we escalated to physical force in an attempt to restrain them - all perfectly legal uses of force to defend ones property (as per the lead officer on the case) Also following attempting to restrain them using physical force, they responded with phsyical force at which point our own physical safety was at risk and we were free to defend ourselves (albeit short of deadly force)

TrackPimp - THANKS MAN! I really appreciate that - Im still a noob - going out to my first track day on 8-12 at Big Track. I will definitely take you up on that!

I would love to make it out to Bike Night. But I got no wheels atm. Also Im not exaclty sure where you guys all meet.

Ill keep you all posted as this will most likely end up in court in some regards.

That's gonna be a false on the ignition fix, although I can get you the parts. Sorry Matt! I'm sure someone on Hypercycles will be able to take care of you in honor of your noble deed.
I can't believe all this happened after you were sitting on my couch in disbelief of Chuckie's car getting stolen *again!* This is one of the things that I will NEVER get used to about San Diego.

I hope they have a painful, but slightly erotic encounter with a big, ugly, aids-infested, gang-member/fellow inmate.

When you say your ignition box is torn apart, can you be more specific, I am looking at the 04 600rr shop manual, and I don't see what you are referring to. I am curious what exactly their theft method was, and also wondering what it would take to fix.

Averagejock
07-13-2006, 04:19 PM
Well, the actual key/lock asembely is totally punched in from above. And they used bolt cutters to cut in from below the triple clamp where the iginition trails down to the plugs at the block.

Im not sure if that a method to jump start a bike (hackin in below the triple clamp at the "igition line") to get at some wort of manual jump start. But they were obviously hoping to ride away on the bike as their getaway vehicle was a coup.

To fix it I assume it will take a lot of electrical work as well as new parts for the entire asambelly. On top of it I will need a new lock/key set up as this one is totally trashed.

The also managed to jack up my side mirrors with rash from knocking tools on them, and there is some minot fairring damage, also from forcibly moving the bike and banging on it with tools.

amrx
07-13-2006, 04:55 PM
Getting it running again shouldn't be to hard...

looking at the manual, if they shorted out the keyed ignitions switch they could just ride it away like they had the key, probably what they were attepmting to do.

The temporary solution would be to just solder a little switch between the red and red/black wires (or so the manual says) that lead to the destroyed key-based switch, so you could flip the switch to on, and it would be like turning the key to run/on/whatever. Then you can ride. I wouldn't recommend parking it that way though.

As for the permanant fix, you definately need a new key, and ignitions switch. They do charge out the butt for those (for cars at least) but other than the new switch, and figureing out out to mount it, it shouldn't be more than maybe some wire, solder and heat-shrink tubing. That stuff runs pretty cheap.

Of course, I haven't seen it soo... thats just from the description you gave.

Here is a reference.

Jae - Dont mind at all, glad to spread the love.

As far as money goes. The court will most likely order restitution payements to me and State Farm. Payments which the crooks most likely will be unable to pay - so basically nothign gets done about it.

The detective put on this case, is pretty into it - as he said that often when you catch one group of guys, they are responslibe for a bunch of cases. Hes been to my place a bunchof times and taken pull prints off my bike and anything else they may have touched.

Good news is Im the only one who has touched that bike in the past few months. So anybody elses prints but mine a crooks.

Hey, was wondering if any kind soul out there with a trailer or pickup would help me get my bike to Buymoto. AAA says since its not a normal 4-wheeled vehicle they wont cover/tow it.

I was hoping to get my bike into Buymoto sometime today before they close at 7pm. I know thats kinda late notice for anybody to help me out - and most everybody (including myself) is normally working. BUT - I figured Id just throw it out there and hope somebody can help me out.
