(03-09-2004) - A wildfire scorched several acres of timberland on Palomar Mountain Tuesday, briefly threatening back-country homes but causing no structural damage or injuries, authorities said.
A permitted residential burn flared up and sparked the blaze in Cleveland National Forest shortly after noon, according to firefighting officials.
By 1:30 p.m., ground crews and personnel aboard emergency services helicopters had gotten a good handle on the two- to four-acre burn area, said Chris Cardwell, a dispatcher for the federal wilderness preserve.
This afternoon's unseasonably hot and dry conditions, the proximity of houses and fresh memories of last fall's disastrous firestorms prompted some serious concerns when the blaze erupted.
"It sure had us scared there for a while," Cardwell said.
